The original version of the design shown here comes from Turkey, where, long ago, it once served as a round metal tray cover. It was made of linen and silk with gilt metal thread in the embroidery.
We slightly recolored the design, digitally restored it into the proper circular shape, then overlaid a dozen of those images to make this graphic. Then we named it Ankara, for the capital of Turkey, because it's a pretty name for a pretty fabric.
The actual embroidery was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wade to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1916.
